Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 5, 2026

Your Crisis Guide (“we,” “us,” or “our”) is a free resource that helps families navigate a medical crisis. We take your privacy seriously — especially because the people who use this site are often going through one of the hardest times of their lives. This policy explains what information we collect, why, and the choices you have.

The short version:

  • We collect only what we need — a name and email if you create a free account, and whatever you send us through our contact form.
  • We do not ask for medical or health information, and we never sell or rent your information.
  • We use only essential cookies (to keep you logged in and to load pages faster) — no advertising or cross-site tracking.
  • You can ask us to show, correct, or delete your information anytime through our Contact page.

This policy applies to the Your Crisis Guide website, your account, and our contact form. It does not cover other websites we link to (such as government programs, foundations, or retailers) — those have their own privacy policies.

Who we are

Your Crisis Guide is a mission-driven initiative (nonprofit formation in progress). We are not a healthcare provider or health plan, and we are generally not subject to HIPAA. Our website is yourcrisisguide.com. If you have questions about this policy, reach us through our Contact page at yourcrisisguide.com/contact.

What we collect

When you create a free account. To unlock the full resource guides you can register for a free account. We collect your name (or display name), your email address, and a password (stored in an encrypted/hashed form we cannot read). There is no payment and no credit card — accounts are completely free.

When you contact us. If you use our contact form, we collect the name, email address, message, and topic you provide so we can respond.

If you are a content contributor. Volunteers who help maintain resources for their state have an account with a name, email address, and the state(s) they’re assigned to. Contributor submissions are reviewed before they appear on the site.

Information collected automatically. Like most websites, our hosting and security systems log basic technical information — such as your IP address, browser type, and the pages you visit — to keep the site running, secure, and fast. We use cookies for essential functions like keeping you logged in and caching pages for speed.

We do not ask for medical or health information, diagnoses, or details about your family’s medical situation — and we ask that you not include those details in messages or submissions. If you choose to share sensitive information anyway, we’ll treat it as personal information and handle it under this policy.

How we use your information

  • To give you access to the resource guides and your free account
  • To respond to messages you send us
  • To manage contributor accounts and review submitted resources
  • To keep the site secure, working, and protected from abuse and spam
  • To send essential account emails (such as a registration confirmation or password reset). We do not send marketing email.

Cookies and tracking

We use only cookies that are necessary for the site to work — for example, to remember that you’re logged in and to speed up page loading. We do not currently use analytics, advertising, or cross-site tracking cookies. Because we don’t track you across other sites, there’s no cross-site tracking to switch off in response to a browser “Do Not Track” or Global Privacy Control signal. You can control or delete cookies in your browser settings, though some features (like logging in) may not work without them.

Affiliate links and third parties

Some pages recommend products that may help families in crisis. When you click certain product links you may be taken to Amazon or another retailer. As an Amazon Associate and affiliate partner, Your Crisis Guide may earn a small commission from qualifying purchases — at no extra cost to you. These affiliate programs may use cookies or similar technology to recognize that you came from our site. Once you leave our site, the destination’s own privacy policy applies (for example, Amazon’s). We don’t share your personal information with these retailers; they may collect their own information once you’re on their site.

To operate the site, we rely on trusted service providers in categories such as web hosting, email delivery, spam prevention and security, backups, contact-form handling, and account/login (membership) software. These providers process information only to provide their service to us, and our site may be served through a content delivery network (CDN) for speed and security.

How we share information

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We share information only when:

  • It’s needed for a service provider to operate the site (e.g., hosting, email delivery)
  • We’re legally required to (e.g., a valid legal request)
  • It’s necessary to protect the safety, rights, or security of our users or the site

Where your information is processed

Your Crisis Guide is based in the United States, and your information is processed here. If you access the site from outside the U.S., you understand that your information will be processed in the United States.

How long we keep information

We keep account information for as long as your account is active. If you ask us to delete your account, we remove your personal information, though copies may remain in routine backups for a limited time before they’re overwritten. Contact-form messages are generally kept for up to about two years so we can respond and keep records. Automatic security and server logs are kept for a short period to help protect the site.

Your choices and rights

You can:

  • Ask what personal information we have about you
  • Ask us to correct or update it
  • Ask us to delete your account and personal information
  • Opt out of any non-essential email (we currently send only essential account email)

To make a request, contact us through our Contact page. We may need to verify your identity before acting on certain requests, to make sure we don’t share your information with the wrong person.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR (Europe) or state privacy laws like the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). For example, California and several other states give residents the right to know, correct, or delete their personal information and to opt out of its “sale” — and we do not sell personal information. Where these laws apply to us, we will provide the rights and disclosures they require.

Children’s privacy

This site is intended for adults — parents, caregivers, and family members. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we’ll delete it.

Security

We use reasonable safeguards — including encryption of passwords, a secure (HTTPS) connection, and limiting access to personal information to people who need it — to protect your information. No method of storage or transmission over the internet is 100% secure, but we work to protect your data and to limit what we collect in the first place.

Links to other sites

Our resource guides link to many outside organizations (government programs, nonprofits, foundations). We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those sites, and we encourage you to read their privacy policies.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we’ll change the “Last updated” date above. Significant changes will be noted on the site.
